| Article Title: | Training Wizard GPFs when saving data | |
| This article applies to the following products: |
All versions of Training Wizard 97 and Training Wizard 98 running on Windows 2000
| Summary: |
When clicking Done, Repeat or Cancel on a screen within Training Wizard, Windows 2000 will sometimes report an application error (GPF). Training Wizard will be shut down.
If Training Wizard is reloaded, any changes to data are saved. Application errors continue to occur whenever you edit or just look at the data and then close the screen.
| Details: |
This problem occurs only when running Training Wizard 97 or Training Wizard 98 on a machine that is using Windows 2000. To duplicate this problem, follow these steps:
Training Wizard uses a 3rd party OCX control from FarPoint software to implement the tabbed interface you see on many of the Training Wizard screens. For example, when you added your new Location, there was one tab for entering the name of the new Location, and another tab for entering data into the Location Notes field. A defect in this OCX control caused the application error (GPF) within Training Wizard.
The specific cause of the application error was the logic used to display a small bitmap next to the caption of the Notes tab to indicate that there is data in the Location Notes field. When the Location Details form is removed from memory, and this small bitmap is being displayed, the application error will occur. If you simply load up an existing Location record that has notes data and then click the Cancel button, the application error will still occur because:
Based on the above two pieces of criteria, this defect can be reproduced in many different places. Generally speaking, any area that includes Notes or Custom Fields and uses a Tab control to display the Notes or Custom Fields can be a victim to this defect.
FarPoint released a newer version of the Tab OCX control that eliminates this problem. This newer OCX control is shipped as part of Training Wizard 2001. This defect does not exist in Training Wizard 2001. No testing has been performed to determine if the application of the newer OCX control into a Training Wizard 98 environment would correct the problem. The only current solution to this defect is to upgrade to Training Wizard 2001.
